Atmosphere in "Frankenstein"

Gothic novels emphasize horror, mystery, and the supernatural. They are made up by atmosphere, action, and supernatural. Atmosphere is the most  effective element of gothic novels.  The atmosphere is  set by the mood and the setting in which the story takes place. In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley sets the most captivating atmosphere when she states,

It way on a dreary night of November… It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered
dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the
half-extinguished light, and saw the dull yellow eyes of the creature open…

This gets the reader into the mood that something crazy is going to happen because of it being a dark, rainy, cold night in November. Frankenstein is anxious while he is preparing his things to create the monster. His candle light is on the edge of burning out; therefore, it puts the reader into a predicament in which they are standing on the tip of their toes waiting to see what happens. Then BANG the creature's yellow eyes shoot open be began to get move his muscles. Without the atmosphere of this scene, the reader would not have be as involved and captivated into story.

Ghost Story

Mary Shelley's opening to the novel of Frankenstein was four letters written from Robert Walton to his sister. These letters included who Walton was and what he was doing. They seemed to form a personal connection between him and the reader. After hearing all about Walton and his expedition to the North Pole we met a stranger, who was near death. Walton was so much like the stranger, therefore, the letters were a good way to transition from Walton to the stranger's life.

If I were to write a ghost story, I would begin it with a haunted background of  my topic- something that would grab the readers attention and force them to not let the book out of their hands. It would something so dramatic that they would not mind rereading it thousands of times and recommending it to all of their friends.

All Electronics Go *POOF*

If all electronics ceased to work, I would spend my free time being active. This would help me get healthy and not be as lazy as I am. I would take up many sports and activities. During my free time I would hang out with my friends and play different games. We would also have competitions, like seeing who could do the best cartwheel. Even though I would lose every time, it would still be fun to just be around my friends and act stupid. Therefore, I think that electronics would not even pass my mind because I would be having a blast and enjoying life while I am still young.
